Frogtown Farm celebrates community and local food with the inaugural Backyard Farm Fair

This past spring, 500 Frogtowners, partners, volunteers and eager backyard farmers celebrated community in Frogtown Farm’s own backyard along Victoria Avenue.

The fair marked the launch of Frogtown Farm’s Mobile Pizza Picnics, sponsored by the Knight Green Line Challenge. Between bites of pizza made with Frogtown-grown veggies, community members shared their vision for the farm and ideas for collaboration in the neighborhood. These pizza picnics took place throughout the summer at community events and in residents' backyards.

With full stomachs, attendees turned their attention to the many partners that brought resources to get folks growing. Visitors picked up free vegetable and herb plants, tested their soil for contaminants and learned about bees, composting, hoop house building, mushroom cultivation, chicken keeping and container gardening. Among all of this excitement flowed the picking of the banjo and clogging by bluegrass musicians. Many participants posted up in the Friendly Streets Initiative’s pallet parklet to take it all in. Finally, the Backyard Farm Fair culminated with an impromptu performance by Ananya Dance Theater dancers.

The Backyard Farm Fair was a day full of connecting, celebrating and sharing resources. The successful event represents how Frogtown Farm will harness the diversity of food growing, preparing and eating traditions to bring people together. Fresh food has the power to heal and inspire. The farm will do both and so much more up on the hill in Frogtown.

We invite everyone to join us for the grand opening celebration of Frogtown Park & Farm on Saturday, October 3rd.  Join the community land blessing and ceremony and celebrate our exciting future with free food, art, music and much more. Stay tuned to www.frogtownfarm.org for more details.
